June 2006
Today is 15 June 06. Yesterday, 14 Jun 06, was Flag Day and the 231st Birthday of the United States Army. Two events that have significant meaning for this country. They probably will hot have any television coverage or mention.
Last month I spent the last two weeks
of the month visiting family and friends in Oregon and Washington. It was 84
degrees when I arrived in Portland on 18 June. My nephew picked me up at the
airport and said I had arrived in time for the last warm day. He was not
wrong. The next five days consisted of rain, snow, hail, thunder and
lightning, and strong winds. I spent that time above 4000 feet in the
vicinity of Bend, Oregon.
The elk hunting trip was cut short due to the extreme weather. The second night we moved camp and couldn't pitch the tent due to the high winds. So, we relocated back to Bend. My sister lives in Silverton in the Willamette River Valley where the weather was more mild but still rainy. We drove to the Pacific coast at Depoe Bay to try whale watching. That was scratched due to rough weather. All in all I enjoyed watching my sister's ten grandchildren perform in various sports and choral performances.
I traveled to Seattle to visit my two
brothers and friends and some high school classmates. It was a relaxing time
and I returned to Maryland on 31 June.
The Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association is having their 23rd National
Annual Reunion in Washington, DC 1-5 Jul 06. The website at www.vhpa.org,
click on Reunion Information then click on the Morning Report to see who is
registered. Jonesy, we may be able to locate some of our pilots from Troop
D, 3/5 Cavalry thru this site. The association telephone number is
800-505-8472.
I am sorry I missed the Dahlonega ceremony. It was heartening to see the good turn out for this event. My hospital stay and testing came out well. I will be around for awhile yet.
Take care
Roy
